In this article I will attempt to uncover which is the best vst.
But, before that, I have to start with the fact that I haven’t tried all the virtual vsts on the internet,but I’ve worked with most of them, so I have a general knowledge of them.
It’s truly a very good question for the young music producer, whom uses more software, and most likely is at the beginning, and doesn’t know what to use from the big database stored on the internet.
Still,what makes a virtual vst good?
What properties highlights it?
I found 3 of these properties which I find crucial:
1. Possibilities – first, a virtual vst must be able to make most sounds.
Why most sounds?
Because ,currently, no virtual vst can recreate any sound from the sound spectrum, however you set it.
As I said earlier, I haven’t tested them all,but I find it impossible to be an infinite number of virtual vsts out there.
The more possibilities it gives, the richer the sound palette and timbre, the better the program is.
2. Ease of use – another very important property, which highlights a good virtual vst from its mediocre counterparts.
What does this mean?
It means that the virtual vst is very well thought and organised, so you can easier determine a fader,a knob, or other element and to realise what changes it makes to the sound.
Also, it’s a very important aspect because, this kind of vst is easier to learn and use, compared to one which is very complex making it very hard to use.
3. Design – maybe is not that important, because we are speaking about sounds here which give auditive sensations, not images, but it’s still relevant to have an attractive interface, to have an unique design, the combinations of shapes and colours to be nice, and to attract.
For example I prefer the virtual vsts that have an unusual design, very well designed and SF.
I would be unable to work with something that doesn’t look good.
This is a classic subject,and we can make an easy comparison:
A product, even though is a good one, if it has an old and simple package, no one will buy it, because lying beneath that package you would imagine that you would find a product of the same quality as the package.
There are many rumours on the internet about the quality of the virtual vsts.
There are many virtual vsts which are promoted as being the best, even though in reality is not like that.
There is even a top on www.musicradar.com, top54 virtual vst in the world, a top which I consider to be subjective rather than objective.
Let’s take a few of the most popular virtual vsts on the internet and analyze them, to see what are they capable of.
The first would be reFX Nexus.
For the most PROs in the domain it’s considered more of a player rather than a sound synthesiser.
The truth is that, when using Nexus you are limited.
You can’t make sounds using harmonics, you can’t even customise an oscilator.
This is a huge disadvantage, because the presets are limited, and if you want a new expansion, it costs money, but you can’t really learn more with this virtual vst, because you can’t create your own sounds.
On the other hand, reFX Nexus 2 is an excelent choice for those that don’t know how to create their own sounds. reFX Nexus2 has fantastic sound banks from my point of view, many of them having random effects to give the sound a unique feel.
The second virtual vst I will be talking about is Sylenth1.
I’ve tested it for a period, but for me it didn’t have the same impact that it had on others, and this is just my personal opinion.
To start with the disadvantages i could say that, first, it has just a limited stock of only a few harmonics, which combined in a certain way it generates the sound.
Somebody that recommended me the program told me that Sylenth1 is one of those presets that can generate any sound.
This affirmation is completely false, because currently no plugin can cover 100% of the sound spectre.
It’s practically impossible.
So at possibilities, Sylenth1 doesn’t really have many.
It’s very hard to make a complex sound using just templates which can’t be replaced.
But this is just my opinion. Currently, there are a lof of people that use this virtual vst.
What makes it so succesful? Easy, it’s intuitive interface.
Most music producers don’t want to learn complex things.
So they prefer choosing a virtual vst like reFX Nexus which contains sound banks ready to be used, or Sylenth1 which is #1 at ease of use.
For a beginner they are pretty good at what they are doing.
The third most popular is NI Massive, another vst which uses subtractive synthesis.
This is mostly used by dubstep fans for this kind of music.
This vst is ideal for brutal and violent sounds. I do not recommend NI Massive for harmony.
It’s much more suitable for an aggressive style of music like dubstep or Drum’n’Base, etc.
Like the other 2, Massive doesn’t import harmonics to allow customisation of the oscillators.
This is surely a big disadvantage, but if you want explosive and energetic sounds, this is a virtual intrument that will do the job.
Now, my personal opinion is that, even though i’ve tested this virtual vst for some time, it’s not one of my favorites, because i have an unusual taste when it comes to music and pretty much anything related to this domain.
Probably, many of you will ask themselves why do I underrate some of the most popular virtual vsts, but you will see why if you keep reading.
The best virtual vst are the least used!
At this moment,the best virtual vst is Toxic Biohazard, from FL Studio!
I’ve tried a lot of plug-ins, like Sugar Bytes Cyclop, LinPlug Spectral, Enzyme, Harmor, reFX Nexus, Sylenth1, Massive, etc, but none of them was able of replacing Toxic Biohazard.
In the future articles I will explain in detail what makes this virtual vst so special that I give such a high rating.
Well for starters the number of oscillators (6), the only other virtual vst having such a high number of oscillators being Sytrus (another plug-in from FL Studio).
I’ve uploaded another video with a few presets made in this plug-in to support my earlier affirmation.
If these will not convince you, I do not have any more credible arguments at the moment.
